Srinagar: The Grand Mufti of Jammu and Kashmir, Nasir-ul-Islam Farooqi, on Thursday said that while Sadaqat-ul-Fitr for 2026 has been fixed at ₹80 per person for the general public, the affluent class is expected to pay in accordance with their financial stature under Islamic norms.
“An amount of ₹80 per person has been calculated on the basis of half a Sa’ of wheat, which comes to around ₹77 and has been rounded off for convenience,” the Grand Mufti told GNS. He said the fixed amount is meant to facilitate easy payment for the common and less-privileged sections of society.
Clarifying the position for those who are financially well-off, he said they should not confine themselves to the minimum prescribed amount. “The affluent may pay as per the set Islamic norms, either in the form of wheat, dates, raisins or other approved food items or their equivalent value instead of the fixed amount. They must contribute according to their means and status,” he said.
He further explained that while the general public may pay ₹80 for larger convenience, the well-off are religiously obliged to give in a manner commensurate with their financial standing. (GNS)
