Handwara, Aug 21: An uncovered storage tank located within the premises of Bangus Sports Stadium at Kutlari in Mawer area of Handwara has raised concerns over the safety of sportspersons and children using the facility.
Locals claimed that the tank was constructed by the Department of Fisheries but has remained without a cover or adequate protective measures for a considerable period, despite the issue having been brought to the notice of the concerned authorities on several occasions.
“The tank is very close to the playing field and remains completely open. During cricket matches, players frequently have to move towards the sides of the ground to retrieve balls, which makes the structure particularly dangerous,” a local resident said.
Another resident claimed that few children had fallen into the tank in the past, adding that a recent incident in which a child accidentally fell into it had heightened concerns among residents.
“Recently, a child fell into the tank and was rescued with great difficulty. It could have resulted in a major tragedy,” he said.
Photographs of the site show an open concrete structure adjoining the playing field, with no visible cover, fencing or other protective arrangement to prevent players or children from accidentally approaching or falling into it.
The residents alleged that repeated requests to the concerned department and other authorities to secure the structure have so far failed to result in any corrective action.
“We have repeatedly informed the authorities about the danger. The tank should either be covered or properly fenced so that players and children do not accidentally fall into it,” another resident said.
Residents have urged the Department of Fisheries, local administration and authorities concerned with the management of the sports facility to take immediate measures to secure the tank, particularly in view of the large number of children and youth who visit the stadium for cricket and other sporting activities.
They emphasised that preventive measures were needed to avert any untoward incident and ensure the safety of those using the sports facility.
